The signal

The keeper's ledger

Every festival night, the lamp-keeper of the lane writes the watch down. This is the ledger as it stands. We are not going to explain it, because nobody in the valley can.

The festival lamp lane at night: a rope of amber lamps swaying over the dark path, warm fires beyond — and the far stretch of rope hanging bare.

Festival night · first watch

Lamp 4 would not take the flame. Wick dry. Replaced it. Thought nothing of it, and I want that written down: we thought nothing of it.

Second watch

Lamp 16 is gone. Not broken — gone. Bracket unbent, glass unshattered, rope whole. There is no glass on the ground. There is nothing on the ground. The ground is very clean.

Second watch, later

Lamps 15 and 14. In order. From the far end, toward the village. I have put the boys on the lane in pairs.

Third watch

The dogs will not walk past the twelfth post. Old Kessa says the dark down there is "too clean." We laughed at her. Nobody laughed twice.

Third watch, later

Something was found at the foot of post 12. It is not ours. It is not anyone's. It is written below exactly as it reads, and I did not enjoy copying it.

Kept alongside the ledger

The keeper's ledger closed and corded on a plank table under a hanging lantern, a charcoal stick and a cup beside it, the lamp lane hazed behind.
The ledger itselfClosed, corded, not for lending
A hide stretched in a rough wooden frame, scratched with rows of small rising and falling marks that stop partway; a bone stylus lies in front of it.
Scratched on hideThe tune, as written. It stops where it stops.
An unbent, empty iron lamp bracket bolted to a plank table beside an undisturbed ring in the dust; a lit, sooted lantern hangs from the next bracket over, the lamp-strung lane far below.
From the twelfth postUnbent. Unscorched. Empty.

Seven surfaces have been brought up from the basin so far. They do not rust. They do not hold the warmth of a hand. Two of them hum, though nobody will say at what.

A seamless chrome surface split by a hairline black seam in a precise X.
Surface 01 — cold
The same precise X seam, lit faintly blue from inside.
Surface 02 — humming
A flawless dark lens set flush in polished metal, reflecting nothing.
Surface 03 — do not look long
An angular groove stepped across clean plating, machined to no visible purpose.
Surface 04 — purpose unknown
A rounded chrome cowl in a warm junk pile, its stepped relief pattern stopping abruptly mid-line.
Surface 05 — the pattern stops
Two hairline scratches crossing on polished plating, the metal beneath the same colour all the way down; one thin blue-lit seam at the edge.
Surface 06 — scratched, and not by us
A palm-sized white ovoid caught in a black salvage net, one soft blue point of light inside it.
Surface 07 — it was in the nets
A charcoal sketch on rag-paper pinned to a timber wall: a column of narrow figures crossing a bridge in perfect file, the drawing half-obliterated by a hard thumb-smudge.
Sketched from the wall at Ropewalk. Once. Far off. In file.

Grey-gold dawn on the lamp lane: the near stretch of rope still carrying lit lamps, the far stretch bare; two figures stand stopped beneath it, and two lane dogs sit rigid beside them, all facing the bare rope.

The fire is still lit

Whatever counts our lamps has not counted our peoples. Festival night goes on. It will find that the valley does not scare in order.

Festival night: a crowd of all three peoples around one banked fire — fin-crests, banded faces and tall ears in the same firelight, a child asleep on a shoulder — while the lamp lane climbs the dark slope behind them.
Festival nightEvery year. This year, louder.
